"I felt really seen and heard and she knew exactly what questions to ask to bring to life my internalised experience of autism, and not just the behaviours that are externalised and visible"

- Jacqueline, assessed by Dr Alexa Curtis

What happens after I book?

Our telehealth autism assessments provide a clear process and respectful assessment experience. Our team are here to guide you through the process. Most people choose telehealth, and it works well. If you need an in-person assessment, for example to meet disability support funding criteria, we can arrange one on request in locations across New Zealand, email us to enquire.

1. Initial consultation - This is a 30 min phone call to get you set up for your assessment. You are sent some questionnaires beforehand, along with a form you can forward to up to two informants. Your clinician reviews this before your appointment, and discusses results along with targeted questions. If for any reason an assessment doesn't seem right for you, you have the option to cancel and be refunded the rest.

2. Clinical interview - This is a 2 hr video session to understand your background and traits in detail, covering the recommended approach according to The Aotearoa New Zealand Autism Guideline and published clinical guidelines.

3. Diagnosis results This is a 30 min video session to go over your personalised recommendations. A detailed report is provided within 1 business day (with a chance to review) along with any relevant post-diagnostic resources or referrals for support.

Total cost $1,890 incl. GST · Completed over 3-4 weeks · All assessments include a comprehensive report.

What a rushed assessment can miss

At MindMatters, we aim to provide your assessment right, the first time. Shorter, lower cost assessments can miss:

  • When your traits are not textbook. Plenty of adults have masked or compensated for decades. High achievers. People told they cannot be autistic because they connect well with others. Less comprehensive assessments can misread these as a no.

  • When something else is going on. Social anxiety, burnout, trauma and physical health problems can all look like autism from the outside. Telling them apart is differential diagnosis, and it is what clinical psychologists spend years training in.

  • When the questionnaires mislead. Psychometric measures produce false positives and false negatives. They need someone trained to interpret them in context, not just score them. Clinical psychologists specialise in exactly this.

  • When the people who know you are not asked properly. Awareness of neurodivergence is still low. A partner or parent may not recognise traits they have lived alongside for years. A tick-box approach can fall short. Knowing how to ask, and how to weigh the answers, is a skill.

Being wrongly diagnosed is not a small thing. Neither is being sent away when you should not have been. Either way you are back at the start, and risk paying twice.

The cheapest assessment can be the one you only have to do once.
